MythMakers 35:
A Tribute to Jacqueline Hill

Reviews

A Review by Stuart Gutteridge 14/9/98

"I preferred doing it like a play... the modern ones are better, but I prefer the way we did it."

This is probably one of the best of Reeltime's MythMakers interview video tapes. Jacqueline Hill as Barbara Wright was one of the pioneers of Doctor Who & also one of the less well remembered companions. Which is a shame, as those who worked alongside her obviously thought she was somebody very special.

The tape concentrates in equal parts on her early film & stage work, and it is interesting to hear through her husband Alvin Rakoff, how he felt about her work both personally and professionally (Rakoff being a director). Also revealed is how Sean Connery got his first big acting break, thanks to Jacqueline Hill (from small acorns...) What is most interesting is the contributions from her various co-stars, particularly Maureen O`Brien, a self-confessed recluse (in what must be her first interview about Doctor Who in front of a camera.) These are all very heartfelt and moving tributes, which compliment the footage of her at her only convention perfectly.
